about

Dem Pastukhel’s Doina (teyl 1) [The Shepherd’s Doina, part 1]

Odeon 14051-A, mx. Ve73 (ca. 1911)

The music on this recording, and the performance style, are identical to that of a recording produced on the European Favorite label titled “Rumänische Fantasien 2. Teil”. That recording is better-known because it was also sold in the USA as a‘parallel issue’ on the Columbia label (No. 10 in this album), but this one has a much better sound quality and balance between the two instruments.
The record is in the Robert and Molly Freedman Jewish Music Archive at the University of Pennsylvania Library. Mr. Freedman instructed the staff managing the collection to make this transfer for me in October 2015, thereby solving a 28-year-old puzzle as to the source of this particular recording. Copies of this had been circulated on cassette among collectors - I got mine from Stuart Brotman in 1986 - but the notes that accompanied the cassette were vague and inconsistent, giving no information as to the label, title, performer, nor to the location or owner of the source record.
It’s a fabulous recording of fabulous music that is not related to any other known tune or composition, but Jewish/Romanian folk-art music at its best!
