about

“Dudochka” translates to ‘reed’ or ‘reed pipe’ but I suspect it is also a more colloquial term for a bagpipe, known in both Yiddish/German as ‘dudlzak/Dudelsack’. Perhaps it refers to a shepherd’s flute. Both pipes and flutes have pastoral associations in European folklore, so the specific instrument probably doesn’t matter; This is more likely a reference to a type of tune than to a particular instrument. It may mean that the tune has pastoral associations, or that it is in the character of a tune that can be played on a simple folk instrument. Similar references exist in several Yiddish song and tune titles, where ‘dudele’ or ‘dudkele’ means a ‘little tune’. (English use of ‘tooting’ or ‘tootling’ on a simple instrument comes to mind, and is perhaps related.)
