about

The title refers to a popular Yiddish song. Like many klezmer melodies, this instrumental version has three distinct sections. Most versions of the song use the melody of only the first section, but there is a recording by Aaron Lebedef which has three sections, all with text, which correspond exactly to these three sections here. Whereas the more popular version of the song is a sarcastic put-down, insulting the 'yikhes' (lineage) of its target, the text of the song Lebedef performs is more sober, extolling the importance of yikhes without any implied insult or irony.
There is a more widely-known klezmer tune closely related to this, but with different 2nd and 3rd section, recorded by the Abe Elenkrig Orchestra in 1915 as "Dem Rebns Nign" [the rebbe's tune]
